Dear Kind Neighbors

Dear All,

I am writing this letter on a blazing August weekend. The pandemic is rearing its head once again, and perhaps because of this, the heat and humidity feel weighing all the more heavily. During the unprecedented pandemic, art museums have struggled so hard to survive. Like other members of society, those working for museums had to experience hardships and took pains to fulfill the supposed role of the museum. Nevertheless, amidst the urgent priorities of the social crisis, museums were too often put on the back burner, and sometimes their fundamental activities were even denied. Some insisted that the online museum would be the only answer, and others declared that there would be no more museums as physical places to visit to see exhibitions. While it is said that the vital role of art consists in comforting people in times of disaster, museum people working for that art have felt hurt and distressed on the contrary.

Looking into these wounds, I could not help reflecting on whether we as museums had made sufficient effort to get close to more diverse people. Whose neighbor museums can be in society? This is quite a difficult question. Nam June Paik Art Center always strives to pay attention equally to the local and the global, if with limited resources, but we are often criticized, on the one hand, for not serving local communities enough, and on the other, for not according with the artist’s international status enough. We are now more desperate than ever to find a way where we could do more and better. When these anxieties were getting deeper, Jade Keunhye Lim and Haeju Kim offered me a proposal. It was like a cold shower for me when tired of the sweltering heat. Responsible for different types of museum, three of us found ourselves having a genuine empathy without much explanation. And within less than two months of gathering, an exciting project titled Kind Neighbors took shape. In so doing, curators from the three museums expressed their opinions freely, trying to be attuned to each another respectfully. I realize that we have already been reliable neighbors to one other in the art ecosystem. I believe this will encourage our museums to friendly walk toward another neighbor whom we could not talk to before.

With great enthusiasm,
Seong Eun Kim, Nam June Paik Art Center

August 2021

Dear All,

As you know too well, last year was a time for us to ask ourselves repeatedly about our daily lives and about what we had been and were doing in relation to art. We are still stuck in that long tunnel. We still hear the news that since the outbreak of the pandemic, the international mobility has decreased, that conflicts between people have deepened, or that the virus is spreading through the weakest links and blind spots of social and economic systems. Under the circumstances that even our ordinary everyday lives could suddenly stop at any moment, we were all made to reflect upon whether it would be okay that art museums would continue to work as it had in the past. My ardent wish is that the museum’s words and questions made through exhibitions and projects would not be distanced from or conflict with realities, but it is always quite challenging to decide which methodologies to apply not only in its content but also in its organization and ways of working.

Over the last year, museums developed a lot of online platforms and programs in coping with the pandemic in their own ways. It seems this brought up the subsequent questions about the validity of online exhibitions and as to what the museum as a place for aesthetic experiences should consider in the future. The pandemic demonstrated that we are all connected both physically and socially, which has led us to think about who our neighbors are and to envisage a new form of inclusive museums. So I was very delighted to share the same concerns and sympathy with you two, Jade Keunhye Lim and Seong Eun Kim. I felt it pleasing and inspiring to open the door first to each other’s museum before looking outside for those we should embrace. Rather than struggling in isolation, we came to meet one another, share thoughts, and exchange opinions from three different museums. What an enjoyable and refreshing experience!

With appreciation and respect,
Haeju Kim, Art Sonje Center

Dear All,

Pretty ironically, we found time to sit down face to face at last after we, only having rushed forward alone, got trapped in the collapsed tunnel and lost orientation completely. To tell the truth, I felt more inclined to introduce our joint project in the name of “searching for a change in art museums in a period of social transition.” Still, I also want to confess that the sense of crisis caused by the prolonged closure of and restrictions on museums due to the covid-19 pandemic was far more crucial for me. Needless to say, it was comforting for me to share our deep concern that museums, the very ground of our life, might disappear one day, but I think what indeed called us together was the consensus that we needed the power of solidarity, rather than individual struggles, to get through this unavoidable situation.

ARKO Art Center and I were interested in reestablishing the relationships between art and community in the pandemic situation and working out a new museological methodology to mediate them. From the weekly Zoom meetings among the three institutions, I got a lot of stimulation and inspiration. We discussed various issues such as the ontological question about art, criticism about the institutional environment, and the changes in artistic creation and communication caused by new technological media. I wish those who have the same concerns in and outside of art, the institution, and the national border, would become Kind Neighbors to continue open conversations together.

Because the future maps we are drawing do not indicate a single road toward the same destination, we could respect and look for things to learn from the others, rather than competing or vying. Our maps are a space where there are various choices. Little by little, I am starting to feel the sense of relief that I am not alone in this troubled world, see the hope that shared wisdom will find its way, and build the confidence that when we walk together, we can make a way. I would like to send love and friendship to all our neighbors who friendly take my hands in this period when we all are passing through the long and dark tunnel of the pandemic and those who will be neighbors in the future.
